Position Summary:
The post holder, in collaboration with the CNM 2 in radiology, is expected to assist in the delivery of an efficient, effective & quality driven Radiology Nursing Service. The position holder may at times be required to work in the main Radiology Department and may, on occasion, be required to cover on-call shifts.
1) The post holder will be mainly responsible for below responsibilities (in Radiology Day ward) :
• Ensuring smooth operation of Radiology Day Ward.
• Will work closely with IR Secretary/ IR team in coordinating the weekly booking of radiology day ward patients.
• Liaise with teams to co-ordinate admissions
• Liaise with Radiologist about the anticoagulant status of booked patients.
• Co-ordinate preparation of day ward before and after patient admissions & discharges
• Co-ordinate patient discharges with the Primary teams
• Liaise with Patient Flow Department regarding patients who require admission post procedure
2) Direct, co-ordinate and provide a high quality, evidence based nursing service in a multidisciplinary environment.
3) Work closely with other Radiology CNMs to ensure the effective delivery of nursing service within the Radiology Department.
4) Facilitate the training and development of radiology nursing staff in the provision of safe and effective practice through team leadership, management and practical expertise.
5) Be driven for the development of improvement initiatives within the service.
6) Develop, implement and evaluate programmes of care, set standards of care and review and update nursing policies and procedures based on current and sound research.
7) Maintain effective communication and professional relationships within the nursing team and the multi-disciplinary team and clinical support services to ensure that a cohesive effective service is provided within the radiology department.
8) Audit the work of the Radiology Nursing Department and evaluate outcomes of care.
9) Ensure incidents and near misses are reported and acted upon in a timely manner.
10) Ensure an economical management of resources.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
MANAGERIAL
I. Maintain effective communication and professional relationships within the Radiology Department and the wider Hospital.
II. Assist the CNM 2 with the development of duty rosters and the daily allocation of staff within the Department.
III. Guide, support and supervise nursing staff to enable them to deliver the highest possible standard of nursing care.
IV. Lead and motivate staff and influence change in response to a changing healthcare environment.
V. Ensure that the hospital and specialist policies and procedures are reviewed and updated as required.
VI. Ensure new policies, protocols and guidelines are developed, disseminated and understood by staff and are implemented throughout the Department.
VII. Investigate incidents and near misses, reporting these to the CNM 2 Radiology. Implement corrective action when necessary.
VIII. Be responsible for the efficient and economical ordering, and monitoring of stock and the maintenance of stock levels and report to the CNM 2.
IX. Participate in the development of nursing strategies for the Radiology Nursing Department.
STANDARDS AND QUALITY OF CARE:
I. Takes all steps possible to safeguard the welfare of patients through:
• Quality initiatives within the Department with the aim of improving patient care and promoting the further development of Nursing within the speciality.
• Having an awareness of the strategic objectives of Beaumont Hospital
• Identifying, through audit, areas of practice which require review and update and lead in the development of evidence based practice in consultation with CNM 2 and Radiology Nursing staff
• Lead on the formulation of nursing policies, guidelines and standard operating procedures.
• Attend regular Directorate meetings and keep up to date with Directorate and Hospital developments.
II. Judge on the quality of nursing care provided by:
• Monitor and evaluate outcomes of nursing care for individual patients.
• Assess the quality of work provided by individual members of the nursing team.
• Monitoring indicators of quality, ie. Nursing Metrics
III. Play an active role in ensuring the clinical environment meets standards expected with regard to Hygiene, Decontamination and the Prevention and Control of Infection.
EDUCATION - STAFF DEVELOPMENT
I. Working with the CNM 2 create and maintain an environment conducive to evidence based teaching, learning and practice.
II. Act as an effective role model, mentor and leader of staff i.e. leading by example.
III. Take all possible steps to promote the development of staff nurses with the aim of facilitating nurses to be autonomous and expert practitioners.
IV. Identify training and development needs of individual staff assigned to the Unit and set objectives for such learning.
V. Facilitate appropriate study days for nursing and support staff.
VI. Identify and utilise teaching, learning and practice opportunities in the clinical setting and encourage problem based learning strategies based on patient health problems.
VII. Participate in the development, implementation and evaluation of Induction/Orientation Training Programmes and Continuing Education Programmes for Radiology Nursing.
VIII. Participate with research opportunities within the Department.
IX. Lead in the training and development of the Healthcare Assistant role in collaboration with the CNM 2.
X. Monitor mandatory training for Nursing staff within the Department, keeping up to date records and linking with nursing staff in relation to their requirements.
HEALTHCARE ASSISTANTS
I. In conjunction with the CNM 2 ensure that the work of the Health Care Assistants is carried out to the required standard as per job specification.
II. Ensure that the systems for induction and training of healthcare assistant staff are implemented in a satisfactory manner.
III. Supervise, support and encourage healthcare assistant staff in the implementation of their role and ensure that nursing staff know and understand these roles.
SELF DEVELOPMENT
I. Have a creative outlook enabling progress to be made towards the ultimate objective of reaching standards of excellence in the delivery of nursing care and in the co-ordination of multi-disciplinary care.
II. Maintain and update knowledge of relevant professional development and all current trends in the speciality of Radiology nursing, and an awareness of future trends.
III. Attend and participate in staff development programmes and represent Radiology Nursing as a speciality at meetings and conferences, as required.
IV. Discuss present performance and future needs with the Radiology CNM 2 using Job Performance Review in accordance with Department policy.

(a) Eligible applicants will be those who on the closing date for the competition:
• Are registered in the relevant division of the Register of Nurses & Midwives maintained by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland [NMBI] (Bord Altranais agus Cnáimhseachais na hÉireann) or entitled to be so registered.
• Have at least 3 years post registration experience of which 2 years must be in the speciality or related area.
• Have the clinical, managerial and administrative capacity to properly discharge the functions of the role.
• Candidates must demonstrate evidence of continuous professional development.
(b) Candidates must possess the requisite knowledge and ability including a high standard of suitability and clinical, managerial and administrative capacity to properly discharge the functions of the role.
2. Annual registration
• On appointment, practitioners must maintain live annual registration on the relevant division of the Register of Nurses and Midwives maintained by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (Bord Altranais agus Cnáimhseachais na hÉireann).
• Confirm annual registration with NMBI to the HSE by way of the annual Patient Safety Assurance Certificate (PSAC)
3. Health
Candidates for and any person holding the office must be fully competent and capable of
undertaking the duties attached to the office and be in a state of health such as would indicate a
reasonable prospect of ability to render regular and efficient service.
4. Character
Candidates for and any person holding the office must be of good character.
Desirable Criteria:
• A management course is desirable.
• Evidence of strong organisation and communication and leadership skills
• IT skills – including Microsoft Word, Excel & PowerPoint
