Full Time, 37.5 hours per week

Position Summary:
This post is in the Occupational Health Department (OHD) and the post holder will be involved in the day to day running of the OHD under the guidance of the Occupational Health Clinical Nurse Managers (CNMs) III/II and the Occupational Health Physicians.

Responsibilities

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

• Works within their scope of practice under the guidance, supervision of the CNM III/II and the Occupational Health Physicians. Clinical and operational training will be provided on an ongoing basis.

• Provides fitness for work assessments within scope of practice.

• Risk assesses occupational blood exposures and organises appropriate follow up.
• Participates in OH health surveillance programmes based on relevant legislation and guidelines for the purpose of protecting health and preventing occupationally related diseases.

• Participates in relevant immunisation programmes for Beaumont staff under the guidance of departmental and national protocols e.g. hepatitis B programme.

• Participates in infectious disease follow up for employees if indicated.

• Carries out pre-placement placement health assessments for new employees and arranges appropriate referral to the Occupational Health Physician for further assessment if necessary.

• Develops skills and competencies to support occupational rehabilitation and return to work of
employees on sick leave.

• Assists in the development and delivery of relevant OH training programmes e.g. Induction, under the guidance of CNMII’s.

• Educates employees in the maintenance of physical and general well-being during consultations. Integrates health promotion into clinical encounters following training in “Making Every Contact Count”.
• Liaises with the hospital’s Health & Safety Department on serious work accidents and incidents.

• Regular stock taking - ensure adequate supplies of relevant medicines, vaccines and clinical equipment is available in the OHD to support clinical work.

• Attends and engages in meetings both within and outside the department as required, providing relevant feedback to the OH team.

• Ensures that documentation is accurate, contemporaneous and reflects all clinical and non-clinical encounters within a legal, ethical and professional framework (Code of Professional Conduct and Ethics for Registered Nurses and Registered Midwives 2025).

 

Self-Development
• Demonstrates evidence of continuing professional development at the appropriate level and keeps abreast of new developments in Occupational Health.

• Attends and participates in study days which are relevant to the post.

• Is aware of limitations and scope of practice when dealing with complex cases and discusses such cases with a senior OH colleague for guidance and advice.

• Responds in an organised and calm manner to unexpected issues which arise.

 

Evaluation of Service /Auditing/Standards of Care
• Participates in reviewing and updating existing policies and procedures and developing new policies as required.
• Assists in regular evaluation of effectiveness of service, including collection and collation of statistical and clinical data.
• Supports research activities within the department.
• Contributes to the development of operational and strategic plans for the OHD. Identifies areas in which improvements can be made in effectiveness of care and works to achieve these improved standards in consultation with OH staff.

• Attention to detail in all aspects of work.
• Ability to maintain strict medical confidentiality and understanding of General Data Protection Regulations. (Code of Professional Conduct and Ethics for Registered Nurses and Registered Midwives 2025).

• Good communication skills, both verbal and written, with an ability to communicate effectively with all levels of staff and service users both internally and externally.
• Good information technology skills, ability to type, use word, excel and power point.
• Is resilient, calm, empathic, an influencer and negotiator.
• Flexible, proactive approach to service delivery, with the ability to set priorities, develop action plans and report on progress.
• Ability to work on own initiative and as part of a team.

 


This job description indicates the main functions and responsibilities of the post and is subject to review and amendment. It may include other duties and responsibilities as may be determined by the CNMIII or the Occupational Health Physician due to evolving service demands, legislation, and key performance indicators for the OHD.

Qualifications

Selection Criteria:

Selection criteria outline the qualifications, skills, knowledge and/or experience that the successful candidate would need to demonstrate for successful discharge of the responsibilities of the post.

Applications will be assessed on the basis of how well candidates satisfy these criteria.

 

Mandatory:

1. Statutory Registration, Professional Qualifications, Experience, etc
(a) Eligible applicants will be those who on the closing date for the competition:
(i) Are registered in the relevant division of the Register of Nurses & Midwives
maintained by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland [NMBI] (Bord
Altranais agus Cnáimhseachais na hÉireann) or entitled to be so registered.

(ii) Have at least 3 years post registration fulltime experience (or an aggregate of 3
years post registration full time experience) of which 1 year post registration full
time experience (or an aggregate of 1 years post registration full time experience)
must be in the speciality or related area.

(iii) Have the clinical, managerial and administrative capacity to properly discharge
the functions of the role.

(iv) Candidates must demonstrate evidence of Continuing Professional Development.


2. Annual registration
(i) On appointment, Practitioners must maintain live annual registration on the relevant
division of the Register of Nurses and Midwives maintained by the Nursing and
Midwifery Board of Ireland (Bord Altranais agus Cnáimhseachais na hÉireann).

(ii) Confirm annual registration with NMBI to the HSE by way of the annual Patient
Safety Assurance Certificate (PSAC).

 

3. Health
Candidates for and any person holding the office must be fully competent and capable of
undertaking the duties attached to the office and be in a state of health such as would indicate a
reasonable prospect of ability to render regular and efficient service.


4. Character
Candidates for and any person holding the office must be of good character.
